Leipzig method successful for cervical cancer

An almost ten-year comparative study shows that the total mesometrial resection (TMMR) developed in Leipzig has clear advantages over standard treatment for cervical cancer. The study published in "eClinicalMedicine" analysed data from more than 1000 patients.

The results showed that both the risk of recurrence and the risk of death are significantly lower after TMMR. The TMMR developed by Prof Michael Höckel is based on the ontogenetic model of carcinogenesis and specifically removes tissue with a high cancer risk. Subsequent radiotherapy, which is often necessary with standard therapy, is not required.

The study, led by Prof Dr Bahriye Aktas and Prof Dr Henrik Falconer, compared the data of 1007 women from Leipzig and Sweden who were treated between 2011 and 2020. While 91.2 per cent of women with TMMR were tumour-free after five years, the figure for conventional therapy was only 81.8 per cent. In addition, the risk of death was around 58 per cent lower in the Leipzig cohort.
