A „Welcome Week“ in Leipzig marks the start of the third round of the Saxon 'forge' for medical technology, MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG. 50 start-ups and SMEs from all over the world applied to take part, and 8 companies were ultimately selected. For a period of 12 months, they will then promote their ideas and innovations in and with MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG. MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG brings them together with strong partners and thus accompanies them on the difficult last mile into the healthcare market.
MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG is an accelerator for young, innovative medical technology companies on the BioCity Campus Leipzig. The aim is to make it easier for start-ups and SMEs to take the final step towards a successful entry into the German healthcare market and, in particular, to attract international companies to Saxony. The accelerator focuses on industry-specific topics such as authorisation, marketing, reimbursement and clinical evidence. The start-ups benefit from state-of-the-art laboratory workstations, coaching and mentoring by experienced industry experts and, in particular, easier access to clinics and thus users of their technologies. In the past, MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG has already been able to gain the Leipzig University Hospital and the Sankt Georg Hospital as partners, which have a keen interest in innovative solutions for their patients and at the same time support start-ups and SMEs as development partners with clinical expertise.
The startups and SMEs selected in the third round (Batch 3) once again cover a wide range of medical indications and their solutions are based on very different technologies - from diagnostics for the detection of fatty liver disease to AI for ventilators. The individual companies are listed below.
Over the past two years, 16 start-ups and SMEs have already been able to participate in the accelerator programme thanks to funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) as part of the STARK structural change funding programme. The renewed edition of MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG reflects the success to date and the long-term perspective on which the project is based. MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG is co-financed via partnership models. HP, Leipzig University Hospital, Leipzig Sankt Georg Hospital, LGH - Leipzig Trade and Industry and the Leipzig Office for Economic Development are strong partners at the accelerator's side.Dr Ronny Schulz, Cluster Manager for the Life Sciences at the Office for Economic Development of the City of Leipzig, emphasises: "The third round of MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG shows that the accelerator is a strong partner: The accelerator for medical technology companies is a reliable anchor for the life sciences sector in Leipzig. It enables young medical technology companies to collaborate with strong partners such as Leipzig University Hospital and the Sankt Georg Clinic. This is an important step for everyone involved, as innovative solutions improve patient care in our hospitals. The establishment of MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG on the BioCity Campus Leipzig is an enrichment for both sides. The stakeholders are well networked and everyone benefits from the joint exchange - excellent conditions for some participants to settle here.
André Hofmann, Managing Director of biosaxony Management GmbH, which initiated and operates MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG, adds: "This accelerator programme accompanies the participants on the difficult last mile into the healthcare market. A total of 30 companies will be able to go through this programme thanks to the structural change funding. Once again, we can see that both the programme itself and Leipzig as a location are very well received.
Skaiste Arbaciauskaite, co-founder and managing director of INTU Diagnostics GmbH, is delighted to be among the 8 start-ups selected for Batch 3 of MEDICAL FORGE LEIPZIG: „As a young spin-off from the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology, it is a stroke of luck that we were able to qualify for the programme. On the one hand, we can use the fully equipped coworking labs in the immediate neighbourhood. On the other hand, the support in the regulatory area for setting up our quality management system is a great help for us.
