The economic stability also creates scope for investment in patient care. In the past year, new medical technology was developed, including a modern cardiac catheterisation laboratory, innovative radiation technology and highly specialised equipment for neurosurgery. At the same time, the hospital established new treatment procedures, for example for stroke patients and for complex pregnancy diseases. But the real story of the future is taking place on the campus itself. With an investment volume totalling 178 million euros, two major construction projects are being launched to further consolidate cancer medicine and nuclear medicine. This will not only close the last major construction gap along Liebigstrasse, but also lay the foundations for the next development phase. This is because the plans extend far beyond the current projects. In a multi-stage masterplan, the hospital is to grow gradually until 2039 and develop additional space. The aim is to combine the increasing demand for highly specialised medicine with modern infrastructure and more efficient processes. Despite all the successes, the outlook for the future remains cautious. Rising costs and possible cuts in the funding system are putting pressure on university hospitals throughout Germany. However, Leipzig shows that economic stability and cutting-edge medical care do not have to be a contradiction in terms, but can strengthen each other.
