Change at the top of the UFZ

The renowned biologist Prof. Dr Katrin Böhning-Gaese will take over as Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) on 1 September 2024, succeeding Prof. Dr Rolf Altenburger. Böhning-Gaese is moving from the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK-F) in Frankfurt/Main to the UFZ, where she will lead the centre together with Administrative Director Dr Sabine König. This is the first time in the history of the UFZ that two women have headed the centre.

Böhning-Gaese is an expert in biodiversity and land use research and has made a name for herself internationally, particularly through her work at the interface between science, politics and society. She was director of the SBiK-F for 14 years and is a professor at Goethe University Frankfurt. Her scientific focus is on the protection of biodiversity and the effects of climate and land use changes on ecosystems.

She is also known for her commitment to science communication and policy advice, which is reflected in her membership of the German Council for Sustainable Development and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. In 2021, she was honoured with the German Environmental Award for her achievements. Böhning-Gaese sees the UFZ as an important catalyst for the transformation to a sustainable society and plans to further expand the centre's role as a mediator between research, politics, business and society.
