Digital resilience of hospitals in Saxony - new research project launched

Digital tools and instruments make a key contribution to the quality of healthcare, but they also harbour risks. Researchers from the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Dresden (ehs) and Chemnitz University of Technology will be investigating these from September 2023 in the "Digital Resilience of Hospitals in Saxony" (DiReK) project.

New technologies in healthcare offer the opportunity to realise efficiency potential while maintaining or even improving quality. In the DiReK project, Dr Charlotte Förster, Junior Professor of European Management at Chemnitz University of Technology, and Dr Silke Geithner, Professor of Management and Organisation in the Social and Health Economy at ehs, are investigating the question of how hospitals in Saxony are dealing with the associated digital risks.

For Germany, there are initial findings on the digital maturity level of hospitals, but digital resilience has not been explicitly investigated. Digital resilience refers to the ability of hospitals to anticipate digital risks and threats and prepare accordingly, to react appropriately in the event of a crisis or incident and to learn from the incident or crisis for future crises and critical events.

The aim of the research project is therefore to analyse the status of digital resilience in hospitals using a standardised survey and in-depth qualitative case studies.

The research project is funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Science and the Arts, guidelines for the granting of subsidies for research projects.
