Medical care, medical technology, medical analytics

Focusing on the entire value chain of medical care, product development and manufacturing in one place: The organisers provide an outlook on this year's trade fair duo Medica and Compamed in Düsseldorf.
22/08/2023

Medica and Compamed, leading international trade fairs for the medical technology industry and its supplier sector, will take place in Dusseldorf from 13 to 16 November 2023, with 'Where healthcare is going' as their leitmotif. This is a question that is of particular concern to many in view of the current situation: The medical technology market is on the move worldwide. Prices for energy, raw materials, services and many goods are rising. At the same time, budgets for healthcare, particularly in the publicly financed healthcare sectors of many nations, remain severely limited. And yet some striking technological advances, such as in the field of artificial intelligence, make investments in new procedures appear worthwhile. „In view of these framework conditions, business relationships are being reconsidered and renegotiated. It is therefore important for everyone who has something to say and decide in the healthcare industry to keep up to date. Medica and Compamed will once again offer the best options for professional dialogue, good business and the expansion of one's own network," says Christian Grosser, Director Health & Medical Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf, looking forward to both events.

A total of more than 5,000 exhibiting companies (including around 700 at Compamed) will once again present their innovations in mid-November, covering the entire value chain of medical and medical technology products - including all stages of product development, manufacturing and after-sales services.

Patient care, AI and sustainability
There will be no shortage of topics for discussion among visitors from all areas of the healthcare industry based on the key trends that currently characterise the market and its dynamics. This applies, for example, to the increasing „ambulantisation“ of care. It is focussing on products and services for the so-called „point of care“, i.e. for diagnostics and treatment close to the patient, but also on telemedicine applications for optimal cross-sector networking of all those involved in the care process. Solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) and supporting systems such as robotics systems or VR/AR applications („Virtual Reality/ Augmented Reality“) are also in vogue.

And: Implementing more sustainable processes is a goal that is now a top priority in all companies and institutions across all sectors, including the healthcare sector. This includes a holistic view of economic activity to ensure long-term competitiveness without negative social and environmental impacts. All elements of the supply and value chain are examined more closely with regard to optimisation potential.

„Medica and Compamed will, true to their leitmotif `Where healthcare is going´, pick up on these market-dominating developments and set the right thematic accents with their programme and the many presentations by our exhibiting customers. The numerous specialist forums and accompanying conferences during the trade fair and the digital talk format ‚MEDICA DEEP DIVE‘ in the run-up to the event will make a valuable contribution to this, announces Christian Grosser.

Exhibition themes and live programme
The medical trade fair will focus on five thematic areas, which the organisers will present as worlds of experience at the trade fair: Laboratory technology and diagnostics, medical technology and electromedicine, consumer goods and consumables, physiotherapy and orthopaedic technology as well as IT systems and solutions. A range of more than 10,000 company innovations are expected to be presented here.

The forums integrated into these trade fair experience worlds complement the trade fair events with a varied programme of events featuring a mix of short presentations, discussions, pitches and best practices on product applications. The programme includes the „MEDICA CONNECTED HEALTHCARE FORUM“ (on digital networking, including the „MEDICA Start-up COMPETITION“ and the Healthcare Innovation World Cup), the „MEDICA HEALTH IT FORUM“ (on IT topics), the „MEDICA TECH FORUM“ (trends in medical technology) and the „MEDICA LABMED FORUM (innovations in laboratory medicine).

Other highlights of the Medica 2023 programme include the 46. German Hospital Conference (this time in the CCD Süd) for the management of German hospitals as well as the English-language conferences „DiMiMED“ and „MEDICA MEDICINE + SPORTS CONFERENCE“ (both also in the CCD Süd). They bring together experts from international defence and disaster medicine as well as sports medicine and sports science in Düsseldorf.supplier area in „high-performance mode“

The supplier area of the medical technology industry can be found in exhibition halls 8a and 8b at Compamed. The exhibiting companies present themselves with a wide range of high-tech and service solutions in (also five) „Worlds of Experience“: Manufacturing & Devices (including components, parts, manufacturing processes), Services & Advice (e.g. research, development, services), Materials & Research, development, services), Materials (such as plastics, glass, ceramics, metals, composites, adhesives and packaging), Micro Tech (microcomponents, microfluidics) and IT in Tech (software development and maintenance for medical technology).

The „COMPAMED HIGH-TECH FORUM“ of IVAM (IVAM e.V. Fachverband für Mikrotechnik) and the „COMPAMED SUPPLIERS FORUM“ address important industry and technology trends in their programme sessions and offer practical information on new processes, products and relevant aspects of international market development. As at the „MEDICA TECH FORUM“ –, the future handling of PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) – could also be one of the particularly hot topics of discussion. This is because a possible restriction or even a ban on the use of PFAS at EU level would have a considerable impact on the development, manufacture and application of medical technology products. PFAS are used here, for example, in coatings or in components for electrosurgery.

In the previous year, Medica and Compamed attracted a total of 81,000 trade visitors, with an international share of 75 per cent.

The industry portals „MEDICA.de“ and „COMPAMED.de“ offer a variety of digital services for preparing and organising an effective stay on site (e.g. interactive hall plans), for networking with companies and extensive reporting on the events during their duration. From now on, admission tickets and the Rheinbahn Düsseldorf ticket can also be purchased via the portals.
