biosaxony new member introduces itself: European Research Society Thin Films e.V. (EFDS)

Short profile of the company

The EFDS sees itself as a technical and scientific innovation platform for surface and thin-film technology. For 30 years we have maintained contact with all major universities, colleges and research institutes - increasingly also in Europe. We are a member of the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations. Together with our members and partners, we form a strong network for joint industrial research in surface and thin-film technology. We initiate research and secure the next generation of scientists and specialists in this field.
Experts and career changers will find continuous opportunities for further professional qualification in tutorials and specialist events. The EFDS offers an optimal platform for exchange between research and industrial application and organises the transfer of knowledge on current developments and project results together with its members and partners.
Scientific issues in surface and thin-film technology are focussed on by specialist committees within the EFDS and assessed for their social and economic significance. These form the main topics and stimulate innovative research projects.

The holistic management of EFDS research projects supports its partners in:

• Idea-finding phase - active brainstorming/discussion with potential cooperation partners for pre-competitive and joint research ideas from science and industry
• Development phase - support in the search for suitable industrial partners for the project
• Implemented phase – project administration, management and accounting
• Transfer phase - publication of project results in specialist journals, workshops and conferences

Field of activity

The EFDS has three different specialised committees.

The Biomedical Engineering Technical Committee deals with the following topics:
biofunctional surfaces, structures and layer systems for biomedicine, bioanalytics and biotechnology

and the main areas of application:
prosthetics, implantology, bioprocess technology, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, personalised medicine, disease modelling, biosensor technology, chip technologies, sterile technology

Technology

The EFDS represents companies that are active in the following specialist areas:
Surface coating technology, methods for applying coatings to a substrate, methods for modifying the near-surface zone of a substrate; substrate and material producers, component construction, mechanical and plant engineering, manufacturing technology, simulation, surface analysis, contract coating, plasma technologies;

Applications: Medical technology, biotechnology, microelectronics, electrical engineering, optics, tribology, toolmaking, forming technology, automotive/drives, energy technology (photovoltaics, batteries, fuel cells, electrolysers, gas conversion)

The EFDS provides its members with a framework for an intensive exchange of expertise in three specialist committees - holistic management of research projects

Unique selling points

The EFDS is a member of the AiF and is authorised to submit IGF research proposals at national and European level (within the framework of CORNET).

Innovative technologies are the key to economic success and social acceptance. New systems, processes and materials in the field of surface, thin-film, vacuum and plasma technologies can be used to make products and processes more efficient and sustainable. The constantly increasing requirements of customers and legislators mean that technical solutions are becoming ever more complex.
In order to meet these requirements, EFDS works together with universities, colleges and non-university research institutions on its pre-competitive issues.

Financing

The EFDS is a registered non-profit organisation. The association pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes within the meaning of the section "Tax-privileged purposes" of the German Fiscal Code. The association is selflessly active; it does not primarily pursue its own economic purposes.
