Radeberg medical technology company wins major order from India

Radeberg. The medical technology company Alphaplan GmbH has won a major contract in Asia. The company announced on Thursday that it will build a production plant for hämofilters in the megacity of Visakhapatnam on the east coast of India. The order volume is initially "in the mid single-digit million range". An option for further orders has been agreed.

The client is reportedly Andhra Pradesh Medtech Zone Ltd (AMTZ). The project has "special significance" for India. The Indian government is currently massively promoting the development of medical technology in its own country in order to become less dependent on imports, it said. Hämofiltration is a mechanical dialysis procedure that removes substances from the blood that would otherwise be excreted by the kidneys.

Alphanplan CEO Michael Juchem says that this order reflects the company's "internationalisation course". More than 80 per cent of sales are generated outside the European Union. Alphaplan has already supplied medical technology equipment to 20 countries. The company is even the market leader in China. The move into India represents a further milestone. A local presence has been established there within a short space of time.

Juchem emphasised that the company had deliberately refrained from receiving federal or state subsidies. "The increasing dependence on state support and the associated bureaucracy" means that "entrepreneurial initiative is becoming increasingly rare as a primary virtue of SMEs in Germany," Juchem states. "We have achieved this success on our own with our expertise and without government support. We are particularly pleased about that."

The contract stipulates that Alphaplan will supply production systems for the manufacture of hämofilters for a total capacity of 16 million dialysers per year from 2024 to 2027. Dialysers can only be used once in dialysis machines, so they have to be produced in large quantities. The client AMTZ is owned by the Indian government.

Alphaplan GmbH was founded in 1993 and now employs around 100 people, according to the company. Turnover in the most recently published annual financial statements for 2021 totalled around EUR 19.1 million, with a net profit of EUR 1.2 million. The company is owned by Alpha Membrane Technologies Ltd, which is registered in Horley, south of London.
