Upward trend in Saxony's healthcare industry

Kamenz. Last year, one in seven employees in Saxony worked in the healthcare industry. In 2022, 285,600 employees worked in this highly service-oriented sector, 1.3 per cent more than in the previous year, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz on Wednesday.

With a gross value added of 13.9 billion euros in 2022, the healthcare sector made a significant contribution to the growth of the overall economy in Saxony. More than every tenth euro of gross value added was generated in the healthcare industry.

Compared to the previous year, gross value added in this sector in Saxony rose by 2.9 per cent in 2022, adjusted for price, and thus slightly more than in the economy as a whole (2.6 per cent). In a national comparison, the Saxon healthcare industry recorded above-average growth in 2022 (national average: 0.2 per cent).

The healthcare industry in Saxony is also important for the labour market. Every seventh person in employment was working in this cross-sectional area in 2022. In total, there were 285,600 people in employment, 1.3 per cent more than in the previous year (overall economy: 0.8 per cent). The gross value added per employed person in current prices in the Saxon healthcare industry in 2022 was 48,526 euros,it continued.

Compared with Saxony's economy as a whole (63,981 euros), this figure was significantly lower in the strongly service-oriented healthcare industry and was also around ten thousand euros below the national average for the healthcare industry (58,205 euros).

The healthcare industry includes hospitals, doctors' surgeries, physiotherapists, alternative practitioners, pharmaceutical manufacturers and social insurance companies. (dpa with SZ/nat)
