DRK Care Home in Chemnitz Deploys Radar-Based Monitoring to Close the Gap Between Rounds

CHEMNITZ, Germany — Neteera, whose contactless continuous patient monitoring system is deployed across more than 450 clinical and care settings in the United States, has expanded its European presence with a new deployment at the DRK care home in Hutholz, Chemnitz. It is the latest facility in Germany to pilot Neteera’s radar-based technology.

Residents of the care home have enrolled in a six-month study led by Professor Tom Schaal of Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau, who also serves as President of the DRK regional association in Chemnitz. The Neteera System is mounted two meters above the bed and uses high-frequency radar to continuously measure heart rate, respiratory rate, respiratory depth, and movement, all without requiring contact or compliance from the resident or any action from staff.

A Better Experience for Residents and Staff

Nicole Porstmann, director of the DRK care facility, cited three direct clinical and operational benefits she expects the deployment to deliver:

  • Faster clinical response when heart rate or respiratory rate falls outside expected ranges
Clinical review when a pre-screening score for obstructive sleep apnea (EU only) warrants attention
  • Elimination of routine manual checks every two hours through the night, which currently disrupt residents’ sleep
  • Earlier detection of health changes, supporting treat-in-place care, and potentially avoiding hospital transfers

Nursing staff can view resident vital signs in real time on a central dashboard, giving the care team continuous clinical awareness between rounds.

Professor Schaal sees the technology as a stepping stone toward a broader goal: Enabling people to remain safely in their own homes for longer. Following the nursing home phase, his team plans to extend the research to ambulatory and home care settings.

The Chemnitz pilot adds to Neteera’s growing international footprint.
