The fund invests across various stages of a company’s development, from early-stage funding rounds through to the growth phase. Its areas of focus include, amongst others, precision nutrition, the microbiome, new therapeutic approaches and digital solutions for healthcare. In addition to capital, Fresenius aims to offer its portfolio companies access to clinical, scientific and regulatory expertise, as well as to international networks. The Group is thus pursuing an approach that combines financial investment with operational support and is designed to secure access to new technologies at an early stage. Thomas Michael Thestrup will head up Fresenius Ventures; he most recently worked for Angelini Ventures and previously held roles in corporate development, venture capital and the pharmaceutical sector, including at Lundbeck, UCB and Sunstone Capital. With this new fund, Fresenius joins a growing number of international healthcare companies that are using corporate venture capital as a strategic tool. For young life sciences companies, this opens up additional funding opportunities and direct access to industry partners, whilst established groups expand their innovation pipeline through investments in external technologies and business models.
