Saxony can invest more money in applied research

The new funding period puts Saxony in a position to finance major projects in researchand innovation, said Gemkow. In particular, he sees opportunities for key technologies such as hydrogen, energy technology, materials science, lightweight construction, medical technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and quantum technology.

In addition to the purchase of equipment for research, application-orientated research and development projects, buildings and networks can also be funded. Gemkow has already named one specific project. For example, the new pharmacology building at Leipzig University Hospital is being funded from this pot. Which projects will ultimately be funded will be decided in a two-stage competition process. In the first stage, applicants must submit ideas for projects to the Sächsische Aufbaubank. These are then assessed by a panel of experts. Only then can a full application be submitted.
