The Philippines offer long-term growth opportunities for German companies in the healthcare sector. With around 117 million inhabitants, the Philippines is the second most populous country in ASEAN. Previously less in the spotlight than other Asian countries, the country is also gaining in importance with regard to the diversification of supply chains. One growth sector is healthcare.

A growing middle class and economic growth of around 6% per year are driving demand for healthcare services. Despite this dynamic, the healthcare infrastructure remains underdeveloped, with only one hospital bed per 1,000 inhabitants - and therefore offers growing sales opportunities in the coming years. Rural regions in particular suffer from gaps in care, which opens up great opportunities for investment in medical infrastructure, equipment and digital healthcare solutions. High-quality products are in high demand, as the industry is planning for the long term and private hospital groups in particular are continuously investing.

The government is promoting modernisation through public-private partnerships, while private hospital groups continue to expand their capacities. In addition, the market for digital health is growing rapidly - fuelled by high smartphone usage and the expansion of the 5G network.

However, the Philippines has so far been almost entirely dependent on imports for medical equipment. The most important supplier countries are Singapore, China, Japan and Germany.
