At the heart of the project is a shared digital research infrastructure. High-speed connections and coordinated databases are intended to enable cross-site access to research data and algorithms. Among other things, AI is to be used to identify biological target structures for new active substances, calculate individual disease risks, and improve prevention, early detection and diagnosis.
The network is also geared towards transfer into the healthcare sector. Research findings are to be translated more quickly into products, spin-offs and collaborations. For the life sciences sector, the scale of the initiative is particularly significant. For the first time, North Rhine-Westphalia is linking several major university medical centres within a shared infrastructure for data-driven oncology, thereby creating a potential new hub for pharmaceutical, biotech and medtech collaborations in Germany.
